Your Success Intelligence and Success in Your Life
‘How successful you are in the real-world depends on you acquiring and developing all aspects of your intelligence .’ “ Successful Intelligence”, by Professor Robert J. Sternberg, Ph.D. Yale University.
In this groundbreaking work professor Sternberg found that people with high analytic / memory intelligence, what the professor refers to as ‘academic intelligence’, but who had little creative and practical intelligence, usually did very well in school but very poorly in business. That is, what you need to do well in school is often very different from what is needed to perform in business.
Professor Sternberg says on successful intelligence -
"Successfully intelligent people discern their strengths and weaknesses, and then figure out how to capitalize on their strengths, and to compensate for or remediate their weaknesses.
Successfully intelligent individuals succeed in part because they achieve a functional balance among a "triarchy" of abilities: -
- Analytical abilities, which are used to analyse, evaluate, judge, compare and contrast;
- Creative abilities, which are used to create, invent, discover, imagine;
- Practical abilities, which are used to apply, utilize, implement, and activate.
Successfully intelligent people are not necessarily high in all three of these abilities, but find a way to effectively exploit whatever pattern of abilities they may have.
Moreover, all of these abilities can be further developed."
In his book ‘ The Millionaire Mind‘, Thomas Stanley, Ph.D. supports this conclusion. Dr Stanley’s study of decamillionaires found a majority of them had higher creative and practical intelligence than normal. Also, he also found that many of these highly successful people had not performed well at school.
Notwithstanding a relatively low-recorded academic intelligence they were very successful.
Dr Stanley concluded that you should work at developing the creative and practical aspects of your intelligence if you wanted financial and business success in life.
You increase your practical intelligence by increasing your practical knowledge: -
- Practical knowledge is the knowledge that you can use to reach a specific goal that you value.
- Practical knowledge gives you an action plan.
- Practical knowledge gives you the detailed instructions on how to do something that is important to you.
You are tapping into practical knowledge when: -
- You read biographies and autobiographies, magazine articles, do email or phone interviews, conversations with successful people.
- Use successful people as appropriate role models from whom you want to learn how to get what you need to learn, and assimilate this into your experience.
You obtain practical knowledge from the people whose practical knowledge is made manifest by their Success. Successful people who you can adopt as your role model, personally or professionally, your can identify from books, auto or biographical, or articles. Stories that spell out from a detailed study of what that successful person did to succeed that you are seeking to assimilate into your life and career.
Be aware that your good role models have demonstrated high practical intelligence by their deeds and reputation.
As you gain your practical knowledge you gain a competitive advantage in the market you have identified, studied and found to be a niche where you can succeed, that you can exploit, and own. Preferably you are aiming for a market that is not overly crowded with competitors.
Professor Sternberg and Dr. Stanley explicitly warn that you should consider avoiding competition rich markets. That is, if you are serious about succeeding by carving out your niche in the business world, then try to avoid being a follower, that is by not doing what everyone else is doing.
Good practical knowledge is an idea you have that by your application can make you money or boost your reputation. The idea that most of your competitors in your niche do not have, are unwilling to use, or don’t have the capital, financial, intelligence, or human, to invest.
Your Creativity in pace with Your Creative Intelligence
Creativity is your ability to generate novel and interesting ideas and is defined by professor Sternberg as “Creative Intelligence”: -
- Creative intelligence: your ability to generate novel and interesting ideas must be combined with
- Analytical intelligence: your ability to analyse and evaluate ideas, and
- Practical intelligence: your ability to take an idea and turn it into a practical accomplishment
